What’s the White House Up To This Week? Here’s a Breakdown

White House Office of Public Engagement Weekly Update

Good afternoon,

The White House Office of Public Engagement has a number of important announcements and updates to share with you this week.

In the wake of the recent tragedies across the Midwest, the President traveled to Joplin, Missouri to meet with families in the community who lost a great deal in the tornadoes last week. The President’s remarks were made during a Memorial Service at Missouri Southern University. Back home, the President celebrated Memorial Day with military members, Gold Star families, and veterans at Arlington National Cemetery. After speaking at the Memorial Day Service, the President presented a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in honor of fallen military servicemen and women. Additionally, the President has nominated John Bryson as the next Commerce Secretary. Bryson will play a major role in propelling the US economy, while creating success for our nation in an increasingly global economy. (view article on nomination here)

 

This week wrapped up President Obama’s “100 Youth Roundtables” initiative. The round tables, which occurred across the United States and Puerto Rico, presented many excellent conversations and solutions. In the coming weeks, there will be a follow up with young leaders on the issues they discussed and presented.

Building on President Obama’s call for a national conversation on immigration reform to meet Americas 21st century economic and security needs,hundreds of Americans in all parts of the country over the past three weeks have participated in conversations about realistic solutions to fixing our broken immigration system. In addition, this week the President issued a proclamation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month (view here). Along with this, the White House has launched a new webpage, Winning the Future: President Obama and LBGT Americans. This webpage is designed to keep you updated on the steps the President and his Administration have taken, and continue to take to benefit the LGBT community.
